Cray CX1-iWS System
The Cray CX1-iWS™ system reinvents the workstation for the next era of technical computing. Engineers, scientists, researchers and other workstation users are continually challenged with more complex problems and shorter deadlines in which to solve them. The Cray CX1-iWS product addresses both of these issues by allowing larger models and simulations to be worked within the workstation environment, eliminating the need to move the problem to an external shared resource cluster. The result is more productive engineers and scientists, faster product development and time to insight, and workflow that avoids unnecessary disruption.
The Cray CX1-iWS system does this by combining a fully featured Microsoft Windows 7 workstation with a 24-core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 series cluster running Windows® HPC Server® 2008 – all in a convenient deskside form factor that can be run without any special power or machine room infrastructure. The Workstation node features an NVIDIA® Quadro® graphics card that can support two high definition monitors for visualization. NVIDIA Quadro cards also feature multiple levels of GPU acceleration leveraging NVIDIA’s CUDA environment.
The Cray CX1-iWS system can also deliver these benefits to the workgroup as well as the individual power user, by becoming the hub for workgroup high performance computing. It features an integrated 16-port gigabit Ethernet switch allowing additional workstations or iSCSI storage devices to be plugged into the system. Additional workstations can leverage the Cray CX1-iWS’s shared storage, cluster nodes, and even schedule jobs on the NVIDIA CUDA™ GPU accelerator.
The Cray CX1-iWS product redefines what the workstation user or workgroup can expect from their system and delivers a new era of responsiveness and power. The technical workstation is back.
